The main surf break is a powerful, fast tube over a shallow reef, best on 6ft+ south swells and strictly for experienced surfers. The beach below is small, sandy, and usually crowded with swimmers and snorkellers when the surf is flat, with a string of warungs and souvenir stalls above. A short walk around the headland leads to Impossibles, a longer, more workable right-hander popular with longboarders. The area's tourism infrastructure has matured significantly - Single Fin restaurant on the cliff above Uluwatu is a 10-minute drive - but the beach itself retains a raw, tidal feeling. Sunsets from the rocky promontory above the break are among the best on the island.
